Through out life you have no doubt heard the saying, “It’s now what you know but who you know” and that really is just as true in the porn business as with anything else. So how can you get to know others in this business? Simple, you network by visiting webmaster hot spots and these include message boards like Sponsor Chat dedicated specifically to getting to know your fellow adult webmasters or going to adult conventions. Each year the big one is held in Las Vegas every January. The show is called the Adult Entertainment Expo and if nothing else, you need to try and attend at least one of these shows during your career, for the experience. They have some seminars but they are pretty much worthless because the data is so slanted towards whatever company is hosting the event but at the booths you can often find some really good deals on products like legal content, SEO services, web hosting, website design, etc. At these shows these companies setup booths with the purpose of giving special deals, so take advantage of them!

Now adult shows aside, which aren’t always the most cost effective way to network, you need to find a message board to hang out on that isn’t full of drama or problems. I personally prefer Sponsor Chat because the people are really nice, helpful and most importantly, you rarely if ever find any of the drama or issues that tend to come up at most webmaster message boards. GFY is a good example of a webmaster board with great potential that just sucks because of all the drama and immaturity.

The point of an adult message board is to find other people in your similar situation and learn from them and maybe help each other out. I’ve made some great work buddies on these boards and over the years those buddies have really come through for me when I needed extra traffic for a promotion or needed some advice on a design.

So let’s say you find a board you like, you should always remember that you don’t get a 2nd chance to make a first impression so avoid being negative at all costs, no matter how tempting it is to do otherwise. If someone else is being rude, just ignore it and move on.

Made relevant posts. Don’t just spam your URL. Get involved in the conversations. Get to know others and chat back and forth about things they have posted. If they have a question you know the answer to, then post a reply with the answer to their question.

Whatever you do, don’t be a spammer. Put the name of your website and a link to it in your signature and then leave it at that. Just by the very nature of participating within the community, you will be promoting your website.

Follow these simple steps and before long you’ll be making great connections and deals that could really help your business.

As someone with more than a decade of experience being an adult webmaster I am always asked “What is your best advise for me?” It’s such a hard question because the answer really is different for every person. Where one guy may need help with one thing like traffic or SEO, another may need help with someone else like page layout. So I gave it a lot of thought, in an attempt to simply put, find an easy answer to that question … just something simple I could say that would pretty much apply to everyone and that is when it hit me ……

You Must Be Your Brother’s Keeper

What most new webmasters don’t seem to realize is that just like in real life, you are judged by the company you keep and will always be found guilty by association. This applies to search engine optimization and with the feds. Today I was searching for some new content to purchase. I was basically looking for some photo sets featuring either Chasey Lain, Racquel Darrian, Janine, Briana Banks or maybe even Christy Canyon. I went through about 11 different links of so called “premium” or “high quality” content providers, each really sucked. Either the site had a bunch of dead links or hadn’t been updated in years. It was very disappointing. So the next link I click on I find a few video clips for sale of a female pissing. I think to myself, pissing videos on the front page, really?! I back out of that site and go on to the next name on the list. But the question is, do you know why?

What does their illegal or questionable content have to do with me if I don’t buy it? It has EVERYTHING to do with me. If I were to buy a photo set of my favorite porn star from them, that obviously would not be illegal or even remotely questionable, and years down the line the feds bust these guys for the things they are selling that are illegal or questionable, they will cease their customer database and then I would be on the feds radar.

That may not seem like that big of a deal but trust me, it is. The last thing you want as an adult webmaster is to be on the radar of the feds. Nobody needs that hassle. Even if you do everything above board it could still cost you thousands of dollars on legal fees trying to prove you are above board.

This rule of judging who I associate myself with applies to everything I do in business and this includes the very smallest thing such as trading links. Let’s say you trade links with a website that does something illegal or stupid like buyign links and ends up getting banned from Google or any of the major search engines. Research shows that any sites they link to or that link to that site are given a penalty so sticking with the “guilt by association” rule, your SEO efforts just went down the toilet because you are associated with them, even though you personally did nothing.

In terms of SEO it has more to do with being in a “bad neighborhood” or beign associated with that “bad neighborhood”. This is also why you want your own IP address. If you share an IP with a website that does something retarded, then your website also suffers.

So in the end my advise is the same that I’m sure your parents always told you … it’s guilt by association so watch your associations. You must always be your brother’s keeper because if your brother does something bad, you will be punished too, maybe not as bad as him but his bad deeds could haunt you for many years to come.

The End of the Internet Is Near- IP Address Shortage, or so says a recent article in the London Times.

The end of the Internet is near — and in less than three years, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The reason? More than 85% of the available addresses have already been allocated and the OECD predicts we will have run out completely by early 2011.

These aren’t the normal web addresses you type into your browser’s window, and which were recently freed up by Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the body responsible for allocating domain names, to allow thousands of new Internet domains ending in, for instance, .newyork, .london or .xxx.

Beneath those names lie numerical Internet protocol addresses that denote individual devices connected to the Internet. These form the foundation for all on line communications, from e-mail and web pages to voice chat and streaming video.

When the current IP address scheme was introduced in 1981, there were fewer than 500 computers connected to the Internet. Its founders could be forgiven for thinking that allowing for a potential 4 billion would last for ever. However, less than 30 years later, the Internet is rapidly running out. Every day thousands of new devices ranging from massive web servers down to individual mobile phones go online and gobble up more combinations and permutations.

“Shortages are already acute in some regions,” says the OECD. “The situation is critical for the future of the Internet economy.”

As addresses run dry we will all feel the pinch: Internet speeds will drop and new connections and services will either be expensive or simply impossible to obtain. The solution to the IP address shortage is an upgrade to new addresses that can accommodate our hunger for online connectivity. Such a system, called IPv6, was agreed more than a decade ago, providing enough addresses for billions upon billions of devices as well as improving Internet phone and video calls, and possibly even helping to end e-mail spam.

So where are all these IPs going? Well a lot of places really but hundreds of thousands of them are wasted each and every day. What most people don’t know is that each website you have (ie: All4U.com) doesn’t have to have their own dedicated IP address. It could very well share an IP with 25 of their friends but in doing so you run the very serious risk of search engine penalties so “search search engine experts” advise that you get your own dedicated IP for every domain you own from your web hosting company. I mean after all, you don’t want to risk sharing an IP address with a website that just got banned from Google or black listed from Yahoo, now do you? Of course not!!

Although there is no other real “PROOF” that having your own IP improves your search engine rankings, experts are still convinced of it and to be honest, so am I. I’ve seen a website go from #34 to #7 just by moving the domain to its own dedicated IP. Could have just been a major coincidence but who really wants to take the risk of their sites losing search engine traffic for not having their own dedicated iP?

And herein lies the problem. So what is a good webmaster to do? The truth is, I don’t know. However I can tell you a few creative solutions that some webmasters may begin to resort to. This won’t help you if you are put in an IP block with a banned or search engine blacklisted website but it will help you with the “supposed” penalties from shared IPs. Basically let’s say you have 20 websites. In theory you would host them all on one server. Obviously that makes most sense but if we get forced to share IPs what will we ever do? You can take two or three of your websites and put them with other hosting companies. But this will cost you even more money per month. Use those websites hosted elsewhere and link back to your other sites created sort of a network of sites. This should help you with the websites that are getting minor penalties for shared IPs with your other website but you still run the risk of sharing an IP with a site run by someone who does something to get banned or blacklisted and then you’ll have a whole other mess on your hand but in the end, what else can you really do about it?

High Times is a New York City-based magazine. The publication strongly advocates the legalization of cannabis. High Times magazine was founded in 1974 by Tom Forcade of the Underground Press Syndicate and was originally modeled on Playboy magazine, except that rather than catering to consumers of recreational sex, it caters to consumers of recreational drugs.

When it comes to search engine optimization for your website you will no doubt come across a lot of terms that are unfamiliar to you and organic search will no doubt be one of them. So what is an organic search? It simply means when someone types in a keyword or a keyword phrase in the search box and comes up with a listing of websites that are relevant to that term. The listings that are not paid listings, these are your organic searches.

For example, if you go to Google and search for the words Christy Canyon here is what comes up for me. (See image below) Notice Totally Christy as the #2 listing? This is a prime example of an organic search. They wanted to find content on Christy Canyon and got listings that were relevant yet not websites who paid to be there.

If you run a website, I would hope by now you know what Google Analytics is. If you don’t have it installed by now on your pages, you really should. It may not be 100% accurate with telling you how much traffic you have, but it is the most accurate free, remotely hosted counter I’ve seen. But that’s not really why you should use it. It is the extras that come with it, that can really help you out and that’s what this article is all about – well one specific feature and that is the Bounce Rate. A bounce rate is ….

1. Close the open window or tab or simply type in a new URL
2. Click Back Button, which would take them away from the website
3. Time-out, where no other action is taken after set time period (usually 30 minutes)

Why does a high bounce rate really matter?

Well it’s hard enough getting traffic to your website in the first place so if the traffic you do gets leaves as soon as they get to you, then you are doing something wrong. Ideally you want to have such a high quality site that the people you attract want to visit all the pages you designed and love them so much they don’t mind spending money with your advertisers!

I read somewhere that the average bounce rate is around 50%. Anything at 50% or higher means people just aren’t sticking around at your site. This typically means you need to work on improving the quality of your website. Anything below 30% means you have an extremely high quality website and are attracting the type of traffic for the content you have. This is great. 25% EVEN better but almost unheard of and should be a goal you work towards.

There are a few reasons why having a good Google bounce rate matters. First and foremost is pride in what you do! You should be proud of the work you do and work to improve it. Don’t you want to run a high quality website?

Next is because the quality of your website can greatly determine your profits. A higher quality website is obviously more likely to attract repeat customers as well as customers interested in paying for something you are offering. Quality websites always convert to higher profit margins.

And last but not least is because your bounce rates may also play a part in your rankings on keywords for search engines like Google. There is now some evidence to show that on highly competitive keywords, sites with a lower bounce rate get a higher ranking. So improving the quality of your website can help you get even more traffic.

So with knowing that, now comes the time to work on improving your bounce rate. Look closely at your site and try and imagine why someone coming to your website wouldn’t stay. Does your page take to long to load? Do you have more banners than content? Is your site confusing in the navigation department? Do you have custom 404 error pages? These are all things you should look at and consider when trying to improve your bounce rating.

If you hadn’t noticed there is a whole hell of a lot going on in the porn world right now and it all has to do with legalities and several of your peers are on trial right now for a little thing called “obscenity”.

Most people have probably heard about the Max Hardcore trial but he’s not the only one. In fact right at this very moment there are no less than 10 obscenity trials going on and at least two that i know of have already ended this year with guilty verdicts. And you know what? It does matter to you because for every conviction they get on somebody else, the easier it gets to nail you.

That is why it is important that you start cleaning up your act right now. First and foremost look at where your web servers are located. Max Hardcore had no idea he had some of his web hosting done in Florida. That’s how they were able to prosecute him in a state which is known for this big time porn restrictions. Despite the fact that he himself had never once mailed anything to anyone in Florida they were able to nail him on TEN COUNTS OF OBSCENITY because he hosted some of his websites there and he never even knew it.

Where are your websites hosted? Are they sitting on a server somewhere in some state that is known for obscenity convictions like Florida or anywhere down south, particularly Oklahoma? If so, CHANGE WEB HOSTING COMPANIES NOW. Find one that hosts your websites in a more liberal state like California.

Next, look at the content on your website. Are you confident that every single girl on your website is over 18 and are you able to prove it?

If YOU host the image you need the records. Your records are your responsibility. It does not matter if you did not produce the content, if you are hosting it on your website you are going to be able to prove she is over 18 with the required proper documentation. That is typically a model release and two forms of identification such as a driver’s license and passport and to take it a step further in light of the Joe Francis of Girls Gone Wild fiasco, a video of her signing your model release, then holding her IDs and stating to the camera, I CONFIRM I AM OVER 18 AND THAT I AM NOT LYING, THIS IS MY REAL ID AND I SIGN THIS DOCUMENT OF MY OWN FREE WILL AND AM OF THE LEGAL AGE TO DO SO. Then take an additional photo of her holding her two valid forms of ID and keep a printed copy of that photo with all your other documents including that video.

Next keep an eye out on the webmaster boards and gossip websites. If you hear of rumors that some girl may be using a fake ID, ACT ON IT. For example one of the biggest porn stars in our business at one time was in fact found to be using a fake ID. You can read part of the story at Mike South.com.

As the story goes, Wicked contract star Jessica Drake went on a photo shoot and presented the photographer two forms of ID. The names weren’t the same exactly so it made him question the validity of her id. This photographer called up a few friends of his who also happened to have worked with Jessica Drake in the past and they compared IDs that she had given each of them and they all were different! As each of them had different names and birthdays they knew they had a problem and since she was under contract with Wicket pictures, a well known and reputable movie company they had no choice but to go digging for the truth with them. Wicked Pictures for some reason refused to work with them on fixing the situation and instead sent the photographers a nasty letter from their lawyer.

The problem isn’t that she might have been underage, but that the records they had of her were invalid and even if she was clearly over 18 at the time, it doesn’t matter. The law is the law and if you know someone’s 2257 records are invalid you can’t use the photos. She screwed those people who paid her to take those photos because without valid ID from her they can’t use those photos without risk of going to jail.

So back to my point, you have to keep up with the people you are posting on your website. As far as I know (AND I AM NOT A LAWYER) if you are just linking to free hosted galleries then you don’t need to keep up with 2257 records. The main point I’m trying to make is PLAY IT SAFE. Your mother has no doubt said it a million times when you were growing up and holds true as an adult as well …

It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Tera Patrick’s company Teravision is in search of the next BIG adult industry contract star! Tera is looking for beautiful women with or without adult entertainment experience who are willing to work with both men and women. Think you have what it takes to be a contract girl?

Teravision is looking for exotic, beautiful, fit, strong, and serious business minded women that want to be the next huge star in the adult entertainment business!

Submit a head shot as well as a full frontal and back nude photos with contact information to the email address below: Please include the following for your submission: photos, legal name, stage name, birth date/age, residing location, contact info and scene types you are willing to perform. (B/G, G/G, solo, anal, etc…) You must be 18 years of age or over to submit. Got all of that ready? Then please send all submissions to crissy@teravision.com.

But before you do, I want to go over some tips with you. The point of being a porn star is to make money, right? I mean truth be told there is a major amount of money to be made selling your pussy so mind as well go in doing this right. Getting good pictures to submit is important but once you get picked you need to go in with a good stage name.

Pick one name and stick with you. There is nothing worse for your marketing efforts than going through 200 name changes throughout the span of your career. In fact, it’s so important it’s worth saying again …. PICK ONE NAME AND STICK WITH IT.

Pick a name that is easy to spell. People will complicated names often have trouble with marketing. You want your fans to easily find you, right? Easy to spell names include things like Lisa and Lola. An example of a hard to spell name would be Lanny Barby. There are no less than 9 commonly used variations of her name. If you pick a name and can immediately think of more than 5 ways to spell it, you probably want to pick another name.

Next make sure you pick a first and a last name! If you plan on going far, as in far enough to make the really big bucks you’ll want to build an empire on your name that you pick and the only way to do that right is to have a first and last name as it just makes marketing and trademarking easier.

Pick a real name … don’t go with things like Mirage, Peaches or, Princess. Besides being done to death, it’s just stupid sounding. If you want to be taken serious, pick a real name (first and last).

Say the name out loud. Does it sound stupid? Tell a few friends and ask what they think of the name. This is a name you are going to be associated with for years so make sure it’s something you like.

Go to the IAFD and search the name you have picked to make sure there is no other porn star with your name. You want a name that is unique. They have cataloged a database of over 80,000 porn stars dating back to like original from the 1970’s to the porn stars of today.

Google the name and make sure that it’s not associated with some crazy serial killer or anything like that. You never know. You don’t want to end up picking the name you will regret a year later.

Pick a name where a domain name is available. Go to GoDaddy and search the names you like and if the dot com is available buy it before applying to work with any porn company. If the .com version of your name isn’t available, pick another name.

IT CAN AND WILL HAPPEN TO YOU. IT’S JUST A MATTER OF WHEN!

What am I going on about? Well it’s about theft. No, not identity theft that you hear about on TV all to often, but domain name theft. The experts say that 1 out of 3 people in the U.S. will fall victim to some sort of identity theft in their lifetime. I would venture to say that a good half of those fall victim because they do stupid stuff like click on links to phising sites that they get via email.

Now before you get all smug and think you are above all of this … that you would never do anything that stupid …. well let me tell you a good number of adult webmasters do something just as stupid every single day and that is they use a free email service such as Hotmail, Yahoo or Gmail for their domain name accounts.

Free email accounts are great because they are free, but they are also vulnerable to attacks, hackings and exploits that normal email accounts don’t tend to be. This means that you are putting all of your domain name account information at risk of being exposed and that means you are making it easy for a domain name hijacker to steal your domain names and there is every chance in the world that once they are gone, you can’t get them back.

The domain name message boards are full of guys flipping out because they lost their domain names this way and they are quick to blame the registrars like GoDaddy when in reality they only have themselves to blame.

So what can you do to keep your accounts protected? Keep the email address that you use for your domain name account secret. Don’t use it anywhere else except for your domain names and don’t let it be one of those free email accounts like Yahoo email, Hotmail or Gmail. Make sure the password on that email account is very hard to guess. Don’t use a word from the dictionary and always use a combination of letters and numbers. The password should be a minimum of 8 characters long as well. monitor this email address closely and you will have improved the security of your domain name account ten fold.

It’s true, you COULD be the next Joe Francis but by that I don’t mean be rich and famous, I mean the Joe Francis that sat on his ass in jail for the last year because he didn’t have all his paperwork lined up. I think for the most part, we all agree that Joe Francis from Girls Gone Wild got screwed down in Florida that was in essence a battle over 2257 regulations.

But don’t think it can’t happen to you too because it very well can! I can’t tell you how many webmasters I have spoken to that are convinced the feds only went after Joe Francis because Girls Gone Wild is such a big brand and that the government wanted to make a point. And perhaps that is true but what you dont realize is that they also like to have examples of cases they have convicted people on and for those sure fire convictions you think they go after the big boys with the big lawyers? HELL NO! They want to line up as many small guys who can’t afford to hire big time lawyers to defend them for quick and easy convictions. And you are stupid if you think anything else. You CAN be busted for 2257 just like Joe Francis.

So what should you do to prevent that? Make sure that you have the proper documentation on every single model on your website. By that I mean a model release, a copy of two forms of ID and a photo of the girl holding the ID, and a photo or video of the girl signing the model release. Some people (the smart ones I say) will even go as far as getting a video clip of the girl saying things like …

Hi! My name is X and I certify that I am over 18 years of age. Here is my two forms of id to prove that I am over 18 and I am who I say I am (zoom in on it), and here is the release I just signed (zoom in on it). I am 100% for sure, without a doubt over 18 years of age.

Then they keep that footage on file with the girls other documents. That way if anything ever comes of it, you can show a court that YOU made every effort to prove the girl is over 18 years of age. It may seem like a big hassle but that video clip may be the one thing that keeps your ass out of jail or more importantly, keep prosecutors from bothering to file charges against you in the first place, as you may not longer be the easy conviction they were hoping for so they may just very well move on.

If you are a webmaster who purchases already made content, don’t just assume someone, somewhere has the legal documents you need to stay out of jail stored safely away. GET COPIES! Be responsible for your own destiny. Don’t just hope the people you buy content from has it taken care of.

If you aren’t sure you have what you need, don’t just assume, HIRE A LAWYER. Even if just for an hour or two, so that they can review what you have and make sure you are in the clear as far as legal paperwork goes.

In the end you have to remember that you are in a unique industry that isn’t as simple as running a small business that is perhaps in another industry. We have a lot of regulation surrounding everything we do and we need to be extra careful that we pay attention to those things because as easy as it is to make money doing what we do, it’s just as easy to lose it all as well.

Gotta love those Republicans with their conservative views and anti anything that isn’t family values, all while promoting a porn company! Oh no, I’m not kidding. It seems that at on March 8, 2008 the more than 3,000 attendees at a Clark County Republican Convention where handed a one-inch wide bright red lanyard, which is a cord worn around the neck, to go with the badges allowing attendees authorized access to the convention. Advertised on these was the website address for porn company Elegant Angel. These were handed out to all that attended including party delegates, authorized guests, convention volunteers and journalists.

Who knew that this, the so-called party of family values, the party whose platform keeps veering to the right to appease the Bible thumpers, would be promoting porn? Go Republicans!!
